NHL: San Jose 4, Boston 2

BOSTON, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- Benn Ferriero's third-period tally Saturday blunted a Boston comeback bid and helped the San Jose Sharks secure a 4-2 victory over the Bruins.

Milan Lucic and Tyler Seguin scored only 29 seconds apart early in the third period to erase a 2-0 deficit and boost the Bruins back into the game.

But Ferriero took a diving swipe at a rebound left by Tim Thomas on a Jamie McGinn shot and restored San Jose's lead 8:48 into the final frame.

Patrick Marleau added an empty-netter while Joe Pavelski finished with a goal and an assist for the Sharks, who used 37 saves from Antti Niemi to log their second straight win and pull to .500 (3-3-0).

Thomas turned aside 26-of-29 shots for the defending Stanley Cup champs, who continued their sluggish start with their fifth loss in eight games.
