Reynolds' fourth-inning shot off Mitchell Boggs (0-1) staked the Diamondbacks to an 8-7 lead that held up, while Juan Gutierrez and Chad Qualls kept the Cards off the board in the final two innings. Qualls picked up his second save.

Ryan Ludwick had two home runs for St. Louis. Albert Pujols hit his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot in the third off Haren.

Ludwick's first homer came in the first inning with one on. After Arizona tied the score in the bottom of the first, Ludwick and Pujols combined on back-to-back homers in the third to make it 4-2.
