Ken Griffey Jr. began and ended the sixth inning by flying out but in between, the Mariners managed six runs on six hits to take an 8-2 lead.

Luke French (2-2) made his first appearance for Seattle after being obtained from Detroit in the trade that sent Jarrod Washburn to the Tigers. French lasted five innings and got the win despite giving up four runs on nine hits.

After Griffey made an out to start the sixth, Adrian Beltre singled and reached third on a base hit by Franklin Gutierrez. Beltre scored on a bunt single by Jack Wilson and Gutierrez took third when the ball was thrown away at first by pitcher Kyle Davies.

A wild pitch brought in Gutierrez and allowed Wilson to go to second. Michael Saunders then drew a walk, Ichiro Suzuki singled in Wilson and Branyan's double brought home both Saunders and Suzuki.
