NHL: Calgary 1, Detroit 0

CALGARY, Alberta, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Miikka Kiprusoff added to Detroit's woes by making 38 saves Friday, giving the Calgary Flames a 1-0 victory over the Red Wings.

Kiprusoff recorded his first shutout of the season and handed Detroit its seventh loss in eight games. Nevertheless, the Red Wings are eight points in front of second-place Dallas in the race for the best record in the Western Conference.

Calgary won its third straight, with Alex Tanguay scoring the lone goal midway through the first period.

Detroit defenseman Chris Chelios left the game in the first period with an undisclosed injury and did not return.

Tanguay's goal was of a bizarre nature and spoiled an otherwise outstanding effort by goaltender Chris Osgood. Tanguay stole the puck behind the net and threw it out front. It ricocheted off Detroit's Brett Lebda and sailed over the shoulder of a stunned Osgood.

It was the teams' fourth and final regular-season meeting this season, and the only one Calgary could win.
