NHL: Washington 4, Philadelphia 3 (OT)

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Nicklas Backstrom scored the game-winner 1:55 into overtime Friday afternoon to help the Washington Capitals beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3.

It was Backstrom's second goal this season.

Philadelphia's Mike Richards scored his 12th goal at the 15:45 mark of the third period to create a 3-3 deadlock when regulation ended.

Mike Green (power play), Donald Brashear and Chris Clark also scored once, Backstrom added two assists, while goaltender Olaf Kolzig made 22 saves on 25 Philadelphia shots as the Capitals won the NHL debut for new coach Bruce Boudreau.

He was named interim coach Thursday when Glen Hanlon was fired.

With the victory, the Capitals snapped a five-game losing streak.

Philadelphia's other goals were scored by Daniel Briere and Jeff Carter, both in the second.

Goaltender Martin Biron was beaten four times on 35 Washington shots for the Flyers, who have dropped three of four.

On the power play, Washington was 1-for-3, and the Flyers went 0-for-7.
