Henin wins second round-robin match

MADRID, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Justine Henin won her second round-robin match in as many days Wednesday, moving her closer to a semifinal berth in the Sony Ericsson Championships.

Henin, ranked No. 1 in the world, breezed past Jelena Jankovic 6-2, 6-2. It was their ninth career meeting and Henin has won them all -- seven of those victories coming this year.

Serena Williams, meanwhile, had to retire from her opening match in the $3 million event.

Williams, playing with both knees heavily taped, lost the first set to Anna Chakvetadze and then retired. Williams is scheduled to meet Henin Thursday in a Yellow Group match. If Williams cannot play, first alternate Marion Bartoli would take her place and assume her 0-1 record in this tournament.

Bartoli defeated Henin in this year's Wimbledon semifinals.

In the Red Group, Ana Ivanovic improved to 2-0 by defeating Daniela Hantuchova 6-2, 7-6 (11-9).

Svetlana Kuznetsova and Maria Sharapova also are in the Red Group with Sharapova already owning one victory.
