Schnyder advances, Bammer ousted in Linz

LINZ, Austria, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Sixth-seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder advanced, but eighth-seeded Austrian Sybille Bammer was eliminated Tuesday at the $600,000 Generali Ladies Linz event.

Schnyder, who reached the final in this tennis event in 2005, defeated French qualifier Aravane Rezai 6-4, 6-3. Veteran Japanese Ai Sugiyama beat Linz native and resident Bammer in 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0. Sugiyama won this tournament in 2003.

Italian Francesca Schiavone defeated Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, and Ukrainian Julia Vakulenko outlasted Russian beauty Maria Kirilenko 7-5, 6-7 (0-7), 6-4.

Also, Australian qualifier Alicia Molik beat world No. 26 Agnieszka Radwanska, of Poland, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
