NHL: Montreal 4, Buffalo 2

MONTREAL, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Christopher Higgins scored twice in the third period Saturday night, as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Buffalo Sabres, 4-2.

The goals were the second and third for Higgins in the new season’s first month.

Bryan Smolinski and Kyle Chipchura scored once each, Roman Hamrlik had three assists and goalie Cristobal Huet made 25 saves on 27 Buffalo shots, as the Canadiens snapped a three-game losing streak.

Buffalo’s Paul Gaustad and Derek Roy scored nine seconds apart in the second period.

Goaltender Ryan Miller made 23 saves on 26 Montreal shots, as the Sabres lost for the second straight time.

It was Buffalo’s second road defeat of the new season.

On the power play, Montreal was 2-for-7, while Buffalo went 1-for-5.
