DETROIT, Minn., Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Placido Polanco went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI Monday as the Detroit Tigers blasted the New York Yankees 16-0.

Brandon Inge had three doubles, four RBI and two runs, and Curtis Granderson had three hits and two RBI for the Tigers, who trail Cleveland by 2 1/2 games in the AL Central.. Ryan Rabun had three RBI and three runs for the Tigers who had 20 hits.

Detroit starter Justin Verlander (14-5) worked seven shutout innings while allowing three hits.

Mike Mussina started for New York and lasted only three innings after allowing six runs on nine hits.

Johnny Damon, Alex Rodriguez and Melky Cabrera had the only hits the Yankees.
