MLB: Detroit 9, Tampa Bay 6

DETROIT, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Jonny Gomes hit a grand slam in a seven-run eighth inning Tuesday, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 9-6 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The outburst made a winner of Tim Bydrak (1-0), who recorded just one out in the eighth. Jason Grilli's troubles earlier in the inning marred an outstanding performance by lefthander Nate Robertson, who worked 7 2/3 innings. Robertson struck out nine and allowed three runs.

Detroit's Curtis Granderson became just the second player in franchise history to record at least 30 doubles, 15 triples, 15 home runs and 10 stolen bases in a single season with his first-inning double, joining Charlie Gehringer's 1930 campaign.

He also made a diving catch on B.J. Upton's sinking liner in the ninth to help Todd Jones collect his 30th save. Granderson scored twice, Raburn drove in two and scored two runs, and Magglio Ordonez hit a solo home run in the fifth for Detroit.

Carl Crawford had four straight hits in a 4-for-5 night for the Devil Rays. Dioner Navarro added two solo homers.
