MLB: Chi. White Sox 5, Detroit 3 (Game 1)

CHICAGO, July 24 (UPI) -- Paul Konerko's two-run home run Tuesday helped the Chicago White Sox grab a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the first game of a doubleheader.

The score was tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the sixth when Jim Thome singled and Konerko blasted a shot over the left field wall for his 22nd home run this year.

Jeremy Bonderman (10-2) the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits over seven innings.

Javier Vazquez won his fifth consecutive decision, improving to 8-5. He allowed three runs and four hits while striking out eight over eight innings.

Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the first when Curtis Granderson led off with a double and scored on a groundout. Chicago answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Konerko got the first White Sox RBI with a groundout that scored Alex Cintron and A.J. Pierzynski doubled in Thome.

Ivan Rodriguez tied the score with a home run leading off the fifth but Chicago's John Fields had a homer of his own in the bottom of the inning. The Tigers tied the score in the sixth when Granderson hit a home run.
