Sorenstam to miss the World Cup of Golf

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Annika Sorenstam will not play in the 2007 Women's World Cup of Golf in Sun City, South Africa.

Her native Sweden will attempt to defend its 2005 title at the January event, which includes players from 22 countries.

Sweden, Mexico, the United States and host nation South Africa are among the participants.

"Annika said that starting her season in January and only ending in mid-December left her too little time to have a proper rest to re-focus on the new season," said World Cup spokeswoman Alison Spratley in a statement.

Australia's Karrie Webb and LPGA Player of the Year Lorena Ochoa of Mexico also are skipping the event.

The 44-woman field will include Americans Pat Hurst and Juli Inkster; Laura Davies of England; Julieta Granada of Paraguay; and Sweden's Carin Koch and Helen Alfredsson.
