NHL: Atlanta 4, Washington 2

WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and an assist Wednesday night as the Atlanta Thrashers rallied to beat Washington, 4-2.

The physical contest got testy in the final four minutes, when three fights broke out.

Glen Metropolit scored the game-winning goal in Atlanta's three-goal second period, giving the Thrashers a 3-2 lead at the second intermission.

Shane Hnidy and Bobby Holik also scored once, and Johan Hedberg allowed two goals on 26 shots for the Thrashers -- who trailed, 2-0, before snapping a four-game losing streak.

Atlanta is 4-0 against Washington this season.

Matt Pettinger scored at 10:01 of the first period to give Washington a 1-0 lead. Jakub Klepis made it 2-0 early in the second period before the Thrashers rallied, and Olaf Kolzig was beaten four times on 32 shots for the Capitals, who suffered their fourth straight loss.

On the power play, Atlanta was 1-for-11, and Washington went 1-for-6.
