Federer, Roddick to meet in Open final

NEW YORK, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Roger Federer and Andy Roddick won their semifinals matches Saturday and will meet Sunday in the final at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Federer -- the top seed who is ranked No. 1 in the world -- continued his quest for a third straight U.S. Open title with a 6-1, 7-5, 6-4, victory over Nikolay Davydenko. Roddick beat Mikhail Youzhny, 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

It will be the third meeting in a Grand Slam final for the two, as Federer beat Roddick for the Wimbledon championship in 2004 and 2005. Roddick has just one victory in 11 lifetime meetings with Federer, beating him in the semifinals at Montreal in 2003.

Federer, already an eight-time Grand Slam champion, will try to win three major titles in one season for the second time in three years. Two years ago he won at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open, and will try for the same three this year.

He has yet to win the French Open, where this year he lost to Rafael Nadal in the final.
