Mauresmo, Sharapova advance at U.S. Open

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y., Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Top seed Amelie Mauresmo and third-seeded Maria Sharapova advanced in third-round play Sunday at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

France's Mauresmo beat Mara Santangelo of Italy, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Russia's Sharapova had an easy time of it with 32nd-ranked countrywoman Elena Likhovtseva, 6-3, 6-2.

Fifth-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia was upset by 27th-seeded Tatiana Golovin of France, 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3.

No. 7 Swiss Patty Schnyder came back from a weak start to beat 26th-seeded Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Tenth-seeded American Lindsay Davenport beat Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Twelfth-seeded Russian Dinara Safina easily beat Slovakia's Jarmila Gajdosova, 63-, 6-0, and 23rd-seeded Russian Anna Chakvetadze eliminated Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, 6-3-6-4.

China's Na Li, the 24th-seed, eliminated 13th-seeded Frenchwoman Mary Pierce, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.

American wild-card Serena Williams made quick work of 16th-seeded Serbian Ana Ivanovic, 6-2, 6-4.

Virginie Razzano of France -- who eliminated eighth-seeded Martina Hingis in the second round -- beat Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, 7-5, 6-2.
