Tiger Woods leads the British Open

HOYLAKE, England, July 21 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods vaulted to the top of the leader-board in Friday's second round of the British Open Golf Tournament at Hoylake, England.

The world's top-ranked men's player followed an opening-round 5-under 67 on Thursday with a 7-under 65 Friday -- including an eagle at the 14th hole -- to go to 12-under 132 through 36 holes.

"I made a few bombs and obviously 14 helped a lot," Woods said. "It's a hole where you're just trying to make 4 and get out of there and to make 2 was just a bonus. Trust me I was just trying to get the ball on the hole and take my 4."

Woods has a 1-shot lead over South Africa's Ernie Els, who shot 65 Friday. Chris DiMarco, who also had a 65 Friday, is third at 9-under 135. South Africa's Retief Goosen, with a 66 in the second round, is fourth at 8-under 136.

Vijay Singh (146), Fred Couples (146) and Colin Montgomerie (148) missed the cut.
