
NEW YORK, July 2 (UPI) -- Alex Rodriguez hit two homers and knocked in seven runs Sunday night as the New York Yankees trounced the New York Mets, 16-6.
Rodriguez blasted a grand slam in the third and a three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth.
Jorge Posada and Nick Green also hit home runs; Derek Jeter had two runs, three hits and one RBI; and Melky Cabrera knocked in three runs for the Yankees (46-33), who have won four of their last six games.
After a lengthy rain delay, in relief, the winner was Ron Villone (3-1).
Carlos Beltran had four hits and two RBI, both coming on solo homers; Jose Reyes hit a two-run triple; and both Julio Franco and Jose Valentin drove in a run for the Mets (48-33), who have lost five of their last six games.
The loser was Alay Soler (2-3), who surrendered eight runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.
