Red Sox sign Josh Beckett

BOSTON, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- The Boston Red Sox have come to terms with right-hander Josh Beckett for the 2006 season.

The Boston Herald reported Sunday that the 25-year-old Beckett will get $4.32 million. With the deal, the two sides avoided arbitration.

Beckett filed for arbitration in November after Boston acquired him in a trade with Florida. He sought $4.9 million while the Red Sox countered with a $3.75 million offer.

Boston dealt four prospects to the Marlins in exchange for Beckett, third baseman Mike Lowell and relief pitcher Guillermo Mota.

Beckett can become a free agent after the 2007 season. He has a career record of 41-34 with an ERA of 3.46. In 609 innings, he has 223 walks and 607 strikeouts.

In 2005, he was 15-8 with a 3.38 ERA in 153 innings over 29 starts. He was the second overall pick in the 1999 amateur draft.
