Woods was paired with Fred Couples late Wednesday for the first day of action on Thursday.

The U.S. team also features Justin Leonard, Davis Love III, Jim Furyk and David Toms -- who says he is fully recovered from the heart episode he had last week at the 84 Lumber Classic at Farmington, Pa.

The opposition includes the world's second-ranked player, Vijay Singh, Retief Goosen (5), Mike Weir (27) and Michael Campbell (19).

In 2003, the teams tied at 17 at George, South Africa.
