With the teams tied at 4-4, Jeter began the ninth with a walk off Bob Wickman and stole second. Wickman struck out Gary Sheffield and retired Rodriguez on a groundout, but Matsui laced a base hit to left which brought in Jeter with the go-ahead tally.

Tom Gordon (6-3) threw a scoreless eighth to pick up the victory for the second consecutive day, while Mariano Rivera retired the side in order in the ninth for his 43th save.

Wickman (0-2) has taken the loss in both games of the series.
