"He is an outstanding football coach," Coughlin told Sporting Life. "He has an old-fashioned work ethic. He goes to work and does his job. He is not a hype guy. He is meticulous and detailed."

Hufnagel has worked with quarterbacks such as Tom Brady, Mark Brunell and Peyton Manning and also coached Doug Flutie and Jeff Garcia in the Canadian Football League.

He started his coaching career in 1987 as a player-coach with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL. He was the offensive co-coordinator of the Calgary Stampeders, 1990-96.

He also posted a 17-11 record in two seasons (1997-98) as coach of the New Jersey Red Dogs of the Arena League.
