Davenport moves into quarterfinals

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Lindsay Davenport overcame a sloppy effort Thursday to defeat unseeded Argentine Paola Suarez at the JP Morgan Chase Open.

Davenport's 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory put her in the quarterfinals. She recorded nine aces and had 31 winners, twice as many as Suarez. But Davenport committed 46 unforced errors, 29 more than her opponent.

Fourth seed Ai Sugiyama of Japan ended the run of 14-year-old Ukrainian Viktoriya Kutuzova, 6-2, 6-3.

Meanwhile, 16th seed Francesca Schiavone crushed Italian compatriot Rita Grande, 6-3, 6-0, to open Thursday's session.

In a pair of upsets, Australian qualifier Nicole Pratt surprised seventh seed and 1995 champion Conchita Martinez of Spain, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova knocked off No. 11 Silvia Farina Elia of Italy, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-5.
