Posada takes lead at catcher

NEW YORK, June 11 (UPI) -- Jorge Posada of the New York Yankees has moved past Ivan Rodriguez of the Texas Rangers in the latest American League All-Star Game balloting for the 73rd All-Star Game on July 9 at Milwaukee.

Posada has collected 280,992 votes, moving 6,150 votes ahead of Rodriguez, a 10-time All-Star at catcher. Posada leads all American League players at his position with 10 homers and has more RBI (41) than any catcher in baseball entering Tuesday's games.

With Posada passing Rodriguez, the Yankees have three players leading at the their respective positions.

Second baseman Alfonso Soriano has 380,947 votes, more than 80,000 ahead of Bret Boone of Seattle. First baseman Jason Giambi of the Yankees has 293,287 and is comfortably ahead of the Mariners' John Olerud (177,256).

Ichiro Suzuki of the Mariners continues to lead all American Leaguers with 513,684 votes.

Manny Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox is sidelined with a fractured index finger, but he again ranks second among outfielders with 326,948 votes. Torii Hunter of the Minnesota Twins (281,699) moved ahead of Seattle's Mike Cameron (238,678) for the third spot among outfielders.

Alex Rodriguez of Texas leads at shortstop (312,045) and Shea Hillenbrand of Boston leads among third baseman with 262,790.

All-Star balloting encompasses voting at all 30 ballparks, online balloting and voting throughout Puerto Rico, Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, Japan and the Dominican Republic.

The 2002 National and American League All-Star Teams will be revealed on the Major League Baseball All-Star Selection Show on June 30.
