Cleveland 41, Tennessee 38

NASHVILLE, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Phil Dawson kicked a 43-yard field goal with 55 seconds left Sunday as the Cleveland Browns snapped a four-game losing streak with a 41-38 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

"Coach (Butch) Davis predicted at halftime that I would win the game with a 44-yard kick at the end," Dawson said. "I was just doing my part. If I would have missed, I would have let the team down."

Tim Couch threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns for the Browns (7-8), who rallied from a 14-point, fourth-quarter deficit and set a franchise high in points since returning to the NFL in 1999.

"The team that showed up today was a committed team," Davis said. "The offensive team came out and answered all of the challenges that were put in front of them today."

Dawson matched his longest field goal of the season shortly after linebacker Keith Bulluck was called for roughing Couch following an incompletion on third and three.

The Titans (7-8) got the ball back with 49 seconds remaining, but could not move into field-goal range as they had their winning streak halted at two games.

Tennessee closes its season next week against Cincinnati.

"We have to come out next week and play with a lot of intensity," quarterback Steve McNair said. "Our motivation is to come out next week and not have a losing season and start building for next season."

Jamel White had a pair of rushing touchdowns for Cleveland, which totaled 48 points during its skid. The Browns had not scored more than 28 points in their previous 46 games.

The teams combined for 861 yards of total offense.

Tennessee's Eddie George had 130 yards rushing -- his first 100-yard game of the season -- on 26 carries. The Titans scored more than 35 points for the first time since the 1999 season finale.

"This is a bittersweet loss, to have a good day offensively and then lose the game in the end," George said.

Touchdown runs of seven and 20 yards by George gave the Titans a 38-24 lead 17 seconds into the fourth quarter, but the Browns scored on their next three possessions to win it.

Following a 31-yard kick return by Benjamin Gay, White capped a 54-yard drive with a two-yard run as Cleveland closed within 38-31 with 9:38 to play.

Tennessee then went three-and-out before Couch hooked up with rookie Quincy Morgan for 78 yards -- Morgan's only catch of the day. Three plays later, Couch found Kevin Johnson on third and goal from the four, tying it at 38-38 with 5:27 left.

The Browns started the game-winning drive at their own 38, following another three-and-out by the Titans.

"We struggled on defense, but the defense rose up at the end of the game," Davis said. "If they would have given up anymore points at the end of the game, it could have meant the ballgame."

Following an incompletion on third and three from the Titans' 41, Bulluck grabbed Couch by the facemask and pulled him down to keep the drive alive.

"The defense has carried this team for a long while and I could not fault them in any way for the result of the game," McNair said.

Couch completed 20 of 27 passes as Cleveland piled up 409 total yards to 452 for Tennessee. McNair went 16 of 25 for 274 yards and two touchdowns.

With the defenses taking the day off, both teams had a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter.

Couch threw TD passes of 33 and 20 yards to JaJuan Dawson and tight end O.J. Santiago. Third-stringer Mike Green had a 17-yard scoring run and McNair threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Dyson for Tennessee.

After a field goal by Phil Dawson gave the Browns a 17-14 lead, McNair found Derrick Mason from 59 yards, giving the Titans a 21-17 lead with 4:56 left in the first half.

White put Cleveland back in front, 24-21, with a one-yard run 1:52 before haltime, but Joe Nedney tied it with a 31-yard field goal as time expired.
