Canadian pledges better airport security

MONTREAL, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Canada's air security chief said Friday his country was tightening up its safety procedures following criticisms about lax standards.

Since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States, officials in Washington have been concerned about border security with both Canada and Mexico. Canadian officials maintain that while security at Montreal's Trudeau international Airport is still incomplete, improvements are being made.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation reported Friday that Canadian air transport security Authority head Jacques Duschesneau said in a response to media criticism, "Every gap is a problem. Every gap, no matter how small, we are trying to improve. "

Duschesneau was responding to criticism in the Canadian media a month ago that security at Montreal airport was incomplete.

The Canadian media became concerned last month after reports that unauthorized individuals were able to gain access to restricted areas in the Montreal airport cargo zone without detection. Other media reports suggested that organized crime was involved in airport operations.

Other reports in the Canadian press alleged that former Canadian Air Transport Security Authority retained their identification badges and uniforms long after being dismissed from the service.
