Serbian officials ask for FBI assistance

BELGRADE, Serbia, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Serbia-Montenergo has invited the FBI to investigate the Oct. 4, 2004, deaths of two soldiers at the military barracks in Topcider in the capital of Belgrade.

B92 Radio reported that the Belgrade District Court said that the Wiesbaden Institute for Forensic Science, which it had employed for the investigation, was unable to complete its research in a timely manner.

In a statement the court said, "We have contacted FBI officials who are prepared to take care of the problem for us. The court has sent the necessary material for analysis and research to a laboratory in Washington."

Drazen Milanovic and Dragan Jakovljevic were found dead on Oct. 5, 2004, while on sentry duty at the Topcider military complex in Belgrade. Amnesty International expressed concerns after the State Commission of Inquiry published its findings about the pair's deaths. Amnesty International's researcher on Serbia and Montenegro, Hugh Poulton, said, "The State Commission's findings are in contrast to the conclusions of the military investigations which denied any third-party involvement, and raise suspicions that the military has attempted a cover-up."
