Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Bandleader Chick Webb, one of the greatest Swing Era drummers, was born this day in 1909 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was just 30 when he died after a long battle with tuberculosis of the spine. Singer Ella Fitzgerald sang "My Buddy" at Chick Webb's funeral, and took over leadership of his band for the next two years.

Pianist Roland Hanna, who became "Sir Roland Hanna" after he was knighted by the president of Liberia in 1970, was born this day in 1932 in Detroit.


Bass player and veteran jazz educator Rufus Reid was born this day in 1944 in Sacramento, Calif.


On this day in 1969, jazz drummer Paul Barbarin died in New Orleans at age 67 while marching in a street parade. Barbarin was a key figure in the development of early jazz in the Crescent City. Like many New Orleans families, Barbarin's had a musical legacy passed down across the generations.

His father was a local brass player of renown, three of his brothers were musicians, and Paul was the uncle of early jazz great Danny Barker. He played with many of the biggest names in early jazz, including Freddie Keppard, Jimmie Noone, Luis Russell, King Oliver, Sidney Bechet and Louis Armstrong. Barbarin often led the Onward Brass Band in parades in later life.

On the New York jazz scene, guitarist Mike Stern's trio and Ron Carter's quartet share the stage at Iridium tonight. Tenor saxophonist James Moody is at the Blue Note. The Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band is at Birdland. Trombonist Chris Washburne's SYOTOS band is at Smoke. Wayne Horvitz¹s "Sweeter Than the Day" project is at the Knitting Factory tonight. Guitarist Peter Leitch and bassist Dwayne Burno team up tonight at Walker's.


The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, New York's most famous Monday night big band, makes a rare Sunday appearance today to open the spring season of William Paterson University's Jazz Room series at the Shea Center for the Performing Arts in Wayne, N.J.


On the Boston area jazz scene, pianist Danilo Perez is at the Museum of Fine Art this afternoon with his trio. Singer Donna Byrne performs at Temple Emanu-El in Marblehead, Mass., with her quintet, featuring saxophonist Mike Monaghan.

The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra is at Symphony Hall in Atlanta.


In and around Cleveland, Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau is at Hudson High School. Violinist Johnny Frigo is at Nighttown. The New Orleans Jazz Ensemble is at Pilgrim Community Church this afternoon.

Saxophonist Ernie Krivda's Swingtown Quintet, the Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Project, violinist Christian Howes, the Townsmen Orchestra and the Tri-C JazzFest High School All-Stars perform tonight at the Cool Jazz and Hot Chef's fund-raiser performs tonight at Shaker Heights Country Club to benefit the American Culinary Federation and the Northeast Ohio Jazz Society.


On the Chicago jazz scene, the Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium tonight. The Donny Nichilo duo and Russell Alan Rowe trio are at Pops for Champagne. Kara Kesselring is at Philander's in Oak Park.

Jean Reynolds is featured in the Cabin Fever Jazz Series at Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest. Jon Weber is featured in an Ain't Misbehavin'" concert celebrating the genius of Fats Waller at the Highland Park Community House.


In New Orleans, clarinetist Michael White performs this morning in a Jazz Festival of Hymns event at the St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church. Have Soul Will Travel is at the Blue Nile tonight. James Andrews, the New Birth Brass Band, John Boutte and the Mardi Gras Indians of the Flame are at Café Brasil. Singer Topsy Chapman joins David Torkanowsky's band at Donna's tonight.

The Neville Brothers, the Soul Rebels Brass Band, the Motet and the Li'l Rascals Brass band are at the House of Blues. Harold 'Duke' Dejean's Olympia Brass Band is at Preservation Hall. Woodenhead and the Trombones from Hell are at Snug Harbor. Brian Cayolle is at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor. Adonis Rose, Roland Guerin, Brice Winston and Peter Martin lead the jam session at Sweet Lorraine. The Radiators and the Forgotten Souls Brass Band are at Tipitina's tonight. The Trombone Shorty quartet is at Frenchy's Gallery this afternoon.


On the California jazz scene, saxophonist Ronnie Laws' acoustic quartet is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. Bassist Marcus Miller's band is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood. Trumpeter Nicholas Payton's quintet is at Yoshi's in Oakland for his final shows this afternoon and evening. Poncho Sanchez and his Latin jazz band are at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton tonight. Gary Rowe is at the Downtown Restaurant in Berkeley. The Stanford Jazz Festival presents pianist Jessica Williams tonight at Stanford University's Campbell Recital Hall in Palo Alto.

For those who prefer their jazz in the afternoon, the Alcatraz Angels Jazz Band is at Dick's restaurant in San Leandro. Singer Gail Dobson is featured with the Mike Vax Jazz Orchestra at the Longfellow School of the Arts in Berkeley. The Dawan Muhammed Quintet is at the Palm Room at the Hyatt St. Claire in San Jose. Mal Sharpe's Big Money in Dixieland band is at the No Name Bar in Sausalito.

Jules Broussard is at Sweetwater in Mill Valley. Larry Vuckovich, Noel Jewkes and Friends are at Bistro 339 in San Francisco. The Larry Schneider quartet is at The Jazzschool in Berkeley. The Chris Potter quartet performs this afternoon at the Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society in Half Moon Bay.
