Mozambique gets loan to improve dam

TUNIS, Tunisia, March 2 (UPI) -- Mozambique will get $25.58 million from the African Development Bank to improve a dam and boost its agricultural output.

The bank said that loan will be used in part to boost the operational efficiency of the Massingir dam and help irrigation of crops downstream. A spillway will also be added to the dam to ensure its safety as well as installing gates and pumps.

The pumps and gates will stop salt intrusion from high tides and protect the surrounding fields from floods.

The regional bank first provided the Mozambique government with a loan for the dam project in 1993.
