May 25 (UPI) -- Nashville released a midseason trailer Wednesday that teases plenty of drama to come.

The preview shows Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) struggling to make her comeback, Maddie (Lennon Stella) celebrating her career taking off, and Scarlett (Clare Bowen) and Gunnar (Sam Palladio) facing an unknown gunman.

Nashville Season 5 will return June 1 in the wake of Connie Britton's departure. Britton's character, Rayna James, died on the show's Feb. 23 episode following Nashville's move from ABC to CMT.

"We'll come back and it will be three months later and people are trying to move on with their lives," showrunner Marshall Herskovitz told Entertainment Weekly in March.

"There's a balance struck between the new stories, some new people that come into [the characters'] lives, and the fact that they're still dealing with this incredible loss," he added.

New characters include Rachel Bilson and Kaitlin Doubleday as marketing expert Alyssa Greene and singer Jessie Caine. Nashville co-stars Charles Eston, Chris Carmack, Jonathan Jackson and Maisy Stella.
