HBO Now app coming to Playstation in time for 'Westworld' premiere

NEW YORK, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- HBO and Sony have announced their plans to launch HBO Now for the Playstation 4 and Playstation 3 just in time for the premiere of Westworld.

HBO Now is the premium channel's standalone on-demand streaming service that allows users to access HBO content as it premieres without the need of a cable subscription.

A subscription to HBO Now subscription costs $15 a month and also features HBO's vast library of content, including television shows and movies.

Additionally, Sony also announced that HBO and Cinemax would be coming to Playstation Vue, the tech giant's streaming television service that allows users to pick and choose which stations they want to pay for.

Playstation Vue offers cord cutters the ability to stream live-programming without needing to sign up for a cable subscription. Each channel can be streamed on Vue for $15 a month each. The move represents the first time either network has offered live programming as a standalone service.

Sony also noted on Playstation Blog that those who subscribe to HBO through Vue, "can access HBO Now on all supported devices at no extra charge."

While no release date for the services was released, Sony promised they would arrive before the Oct. 2 premiere of Westworld.

Westworld, HBO's sci-fi western series, follows a human-looking android named Dolores, played by Evan Rachel Wood, who starts to question the true purpose of her existence while serving paying customers at a theme park.

"The one-hour drama series Westworld (ten episodes) is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin. Set at the intersection of the near future and the re-imagined past, it explores a world in which every human appetite, no matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged," reads the official synopsis.

A new trailer released recently featured Dolores confronting her creator, played by Anthony Hopkins.
