Kristin Chenoweth joins the cast of NBC's 'Hairspray Live!'

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., June 21 (UPI) -- Wicked icon Kristin Chenoweth announced via Twitter Tuesday that she has joined the cast of NBC's upcoming Hairspray Live! special.

"I clinched Miss Baltimore Crabs! SO excited to play Velma Von Tussle in @HairsprayLive this December! #HairsprayLive," she tweeted Tuesday, along with a photo of herself wearing a tiara and spritzing hairspray.

"Welcome Kristin. We love you!" producer Craig Zadan said in a separate Twitter post.

The live staging of the 1960s-set musical is to air Dec. 7. It will star newcomer Maddie Baillio and Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Hudson, Martin Short and Derek Hough.
