Mana honored with star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Mexican rock band Maná has been honored with the 2,573rd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Members Fher Olvera, Alex González, Sergio Vallín and Juan Calleros were greeted by a legion of fans Wednesday as they arrived for the ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard.

Maná was also joined by actress America Ferrera and musician Carlos Santana who paid their respects to the band during the unveiling.

Founded in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Maná built a strong fan base while touring Latin America and Spain and broke into the United States in the early 1990s when they made Los Angeles their new home.

"It's like our second hometown," González told Variety "It was more than 20 years ago that we started playing all the small clubs in L.A., to maybe 200 or 300 people," Olvera recalls. "And then through all the years we were working and working, and growing and growing (elsewhere) in the United States. We didn't know it was going to happen like this, though."

Over the years, Maná has sold over 40 million records, won four Grammy awards, seven Latin Grammys, released six straight No.1 albums on the Latin album charts and set a record for most consecutive sell outs at the Staples Center in 2012, until Taylor Swift took the honor while on tour in 2015.

In 2017, the Latin rock collective will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its debut album, the self-titled Maná "I think Maná is a band that's going to reach a third generation," González says. "I'm gonna turn 47 this year, but when I started off with Mana I was 17. So kids that were 17, 15, even a little bit older back then, they have kids who are now teenagers who are listening to our music, and maybe their parents too."

Following their Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony,Maná performed their hit song "Corazón Espinado" while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
