The 26-year-old British actor will play Robert Dudley in the forthcoming period drama starring Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Mary Queen of Scots will dramatize Mary Stuart's (Ronan) real-life attempt to overthrow her cousin Queen Elizabeth I (Robbie) and take the English throne during the 16th century. Dudley was Elizabeth's counselor and rumored lover.

The movie is based on the John Guy biography The True Life of Mary Stuart. Longtime theater director Josie Rourke will helm the film, with Jack Lowden as Lord Darnley and Maria-Victoria Dragus as Mary Fleming.

Alwyn made his big-screen debut in the 2016 movie Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk and has since appeared in The Sense of an Ending. He is rumored to be dating Taylor Swift, and was spotted with the singer June 3 in Nashville.

"This isn't a new couple alert or a secret relationship," a source told E! News this month.

"The only people this has been a secret to is the media because all of us -- Taylor and Joe's closest friends and their families -- were aware they have been together for several months and have known each other a long time," the insider added.

Alwyn will also star in the period drama The Favourite with Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone.
