'Godzilla vs. Kong': Director Adam Wingard to helm monster crossover

May 31 (UPI) -- Monster movie crossover Godzilla vs. Kong is set to be directed by filmmaker Adam Wingard.

Wingard is said to have landed the job after helming the Blair Witch reboot, Netflix's upcoming anime adaptation of Death Note and horror film The Guest which has made him a top prospect among major studios, The Hollywood Reporter notes.

Wingard is also a noted fan of both King Kong and Godzilla. Terry Rossio is currently penning the project.

Godzilla vs. Kong will be the fourth entry in Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment's planned monster universe that began with 2014's Godzilla and continued this year with Kong: Skull Island which grossed $565 million worldwide.

A sequel to Godzilla titled Godzilla: King of Monsters, is set to release in 2018 and star Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Stranger Things alum Millie Bobby Brown. Godzilla vs. Kong will then follow on May 22, 2020.

King Kong and Godzilla have faced off before in the 1962 Toho production of King Kong vs. Godzilla, one of the studios biggest commercial success'.
