LOS ANGELES, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Iconic movie monsters King Kong and Godzilla may face-off in a planned crossover film according to reports.

Deadline is reporting that Legendary Pictures' Thomas Tull is taking his upcoming prequel film, Kong: Skull Island over to Warner Bros. to unite the property with Legendary's other giant franchise Godzilla.

The giant, fire-breathing lizard was last seen in a successful reboot from 2014. The potential big screen battle between the two behemoths would start production after a Godzilla sequel is released. The report mentions that the studio is speeding things up on this development and teaming up with Japanese Godzilla rights-holder Toho Co. Ltd.

Previously, Legendary Pictures had moved from Warner Bros. to Universal, where they also started developing Kong: Skull Island. The studio has gone back to Warner Bros. in order to make it easier to develop the crossover film.

Skull Island recently added actress Brie Larson to the cast, which also includes Tom Hiddleston. Max Borenstein is penning the script with Jordan Vogt-Roberts set to direct.

This is not the first time Godzilla and King Kong have squared off either. The cinematic beasts starred together in the 1962 Toho production of King Kong vs. Godzilla, one of the studios biggest commercial success'.
