'Star Trek Beyond' releases action-packed first trailer

The movie opens in theaters just ahead of the "Star Trek" series' 50th anniversary.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Star Trek Beyond released an action-packed first trailer Monday after the footage leaked online.

The preview, which was scheduled for release Thursday, stars Chris Pine as Cpt. James T. Kirk, with Zachary Quinto as Spock and Zoe Saldana as Lt. Nyota Uhura.

The trailer sees Kirk and his shipmates attempt to survive a new planet after the U.S.S. Enterprise is destroyed. They're aided by a female alien played by newcomer Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service).

Simon Pegg also returns as Lt. Comm. Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, with Karl Urban as Lt. Comm. Leonard "Bones McCoy, John Cho as Lt. Hikaru Sulu and Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. Idris Elba will appear in a yet-unspecified role.

Star Trek Beyond is the third film in the Star Trek reboot series. It's directed by Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin. J.J. Abrams, who directed Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek into Darkness (2013). Abrams co-produced the movie with Bryan Burk and Roberto Orci.

The new installment opens in theaters July 22, 2016, just ahead of the original Star Trek television show's 50th anniversary. The first two films in the reboot series earned a combined $853 million at the box office.
