Kodi Smit-McPhee to play Nightcrawler in 'X-Men: Apocalypse'

The actor joins previously announced newcomers Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp and Tye Sheridan.

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Kodi Smit-McPhee has been cast in X-Men: Apocalypse.

The 18-year-old actor will star as a young version of Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler. Alan Cumming portrayed an older version of the character in X2 (2003), which saw the mutant brainwashed into an assassination attempt on the president.

"Excited to welcome @kodismitmcphee to the cast of #XmenApocalypse as young #Nightcrawler," director Bryan Singer announced Tuesday on Instagram.

"I am humbled and honored to be joining this incredible project and to be able to tell the story of the well respected young mutant Nightcrawler," Smit-McPhee wrote in response to the news. "Thank you @Bryanjaysinger, and the passionate Xmen fans."

In the Marvel comics, Nightcrawler is revealed as the son of Mystique and the demonic mutant Azazel. He is characterized by his indigo-colored skin, yellow eyes and prehensile tail, and possesses superhuman agility and teleportation powers.

Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp and Tye Sheridan were recently announced as young versions of Jean Grey, Storm and Cyclops. Oscar Isaac will play titular villain Apocalypse, with returning stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence as Charles Xavier, Magneto and Mystique.

X-Men: Apocalypse opens in theaters May 27, 2016. Smit-McPhee is known for such films as The Road, Let Me In and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and recently portrayed Thomas "Tolly" Johnson in Australian miniseries Gallipoli.
