Sophie Turner to star as Jean Grey in 'X-Men: Apocalypse'

The upcoming installment in the franchise is scheduled for release May 27, 2016.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Sophie Turner has joined the cast of X-Men: Apocalypse.

The 18-year-old actress will star as Jean Grey, with Alexandra Shipp as Storm and Tye Sheridan as Cyclops. Older versions of the characters were portrayed by Famke Janssen, Halle Berry and James Marsden in previous X-Men films.

Director Bryan Singer announced the news Thursday on Twitter. Oscar Isaac will play the ancient villain Apocalypse, with returning cast members James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique.

X-Men: Apocalypse takes place 10 years after X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), and 20 years before X-Men (2000). Rumors the film would recast young versions of Jean Grey, Storm and Cyclops began in September 2014.

Turner currently stars as Sansa Stark on HBO series Game of Thrones. Shipp recently portrayed Aaliyah in Lifetime movie Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, while Sheridan is known for Terrence Malick film The Tree of Life and Jeff Nichols drama Mud.
