NEW YORK, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Madonna made a surprise appearance at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Wednesday during a special 25th anniversary screening of Madonna: Truth or Dare.

The 400 fans in attendance were not expecting to see the Material Girl in person as they packed the MoMa to celebrate the release of Madonna's 1991 documentary.

Truth or Dare followed Madonna on her 1990 Blond Ambition World Tour and premiered at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival.

Madonna shared a photo of the evening on Instagram, saying she and director Alek Keshishian "changed history" with the doc.

"Surreal Moment! At the MOMA!! So nice to watch a film in a museum. So many freedoms we take for granted that we did not have then. Thank you Alek Keshishian. We changed history with this film," she posted.

The film can be seen next at the Metrograph in New York City.
