Oscar-winner Ernest Borgnine dead at 95
LOS ANGELES, July 9 (UPI) -- Oscar-winning actor Ernest Borgnine died in a Los Angeles hospital, his spokesman said. He was 95.
Borgnine's family was by his side when he died Sunday, longtime representative Harry Flynn told the Los Angeles Times.
Borgnine won the best actor Oscar for his depiction of a lovelorn butcher in 1955's "Marty," and went on to show his range in a variety of dramatic and comedic roles on the big screen and television.
He starred as the irascible PT boat captain in the TV series "McHale's Navy" from 1962 to 1966 and was the hardened Sgt. Fatso Judson in "From Here to Eternity."
He got his start in films in "Whistle at Eaton Falls" in 1951. His credits also include "Bad Day at Black Rock," "Jubal," "Flight of the Phoenix," "The Dirty Dozen,""The Wild Bunch" and "The Poseidon Adventure."
He became the oldest performer to receive a Golden Globe nomination for his role in 2007's "A Grandpa for Christmas," and he was nominated for an Emmy in 2009 for a guest shot in "ER."
Borgnine served in the Navy during World War II.
In a 2008 interview, Borgnine told the Times books helped invigorate him.
"I do an awful lot of reading," he said. "It keeps me busy. I try to keep my mind going always. That is the thing that counts. You can have your body not feeling so good, but if your mind is working you got it made. That is the way I figured it out."
Report: Usher's stepson brain-dead
ATLANTA, July 9 (UPI) -- Doctors declared Usher's 11-year-old stepson, Kyle Glover, brain-dead after a weekend watersport accident in Georgia, TMZ reported.
The boy is the son of the singer's ex-wife Tameka Foster and her ex-husband Atlanta-based clothier Ryan Glover.
Usher and Foster were married from 2007-09 and have two sons together.
Kyle was critically injured when he was struck in the head by a passing jet ski while riding on an inner tube on Lake Lanier in Atlanta.
TMZ said he had not exhibited any brain activity since he was admitted to the hospital but no decision had been made about whether to take him off life support.
Kourtney Kardashian gives birth to daughter
LOS ANGELES, July 9 (UPI) -- U.S. reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian announced she has given birth to her second child at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
E! News said Kardashian's first daughter with boyfriend Scott Disick was born early Sunday, and weighed in at 7 pounds, 14 ounces. The couple also have a 2-year-old son, Mason.
"Scott and I are overjoyed to welcome our precious angel Penelope Scotland Disick into our lives. We are forever blessed. Mommy and baby are resting comfortably," Kardashian, 33, told E! News in a statement.
NYC's Ziegfeld Theatre facing money woes
NEW YORK, July 9 (UPI) -- New York City's famous Ziegfeld Theatre may close its doors because of recent financial woes, the New York Post reported Sunday.
The Ziegfeld Theatre -- one of New York's most famed single-screen movie theaters -- has in recent months been closed more and more frequently, even during the busier summer movie season. Industry officials with knowledge of the situation estimate the theater is losing about $1 million annually.
Cablevision, which owns Clearview Cinemas chain, including the Ziegfeld, said in May it was putting the chain up for sale. But the company issued a statement Sunday saying, "We have no plans to close the Ziegfeld Theatre."
A Clearview representative declined to comment on the Ziegfeld's financial situation, but said recent special events at the theater included premieres of films, as well as a series of concert films and showing sporting events.
"In addition to showing the latest blockbuster films, Clearview's Ziegfeld Theatre is a landmark location for movie premieres and special events," Clearview said in a brief statement. "It is normal course of business for the theater to be closed at certain times to accommodate these unique marquee activities."
Ross Melnick, a movie theater historian with CinemaTreasures.com, said a takeover by Disney, which in recent years has held successful premieres at the Ziegfeld, might be a "best possible outcome."
However, a Disney spokesman said the company has "no present interest'' in the theater.
The Ziegfeld Theatre, which originally opened its doors in 1927, now shares a skyscraper on Sixth Avenue with Alliance Bernstein, which freelance film programmer Shade Rupe said may be worth more to the city as a hotel.
"The real estate is so valuable, the city would probably just as soon have another hotel on the site than a really special place to see movies like the Ziegfeld," Rupe said.
