LOS ANGELES, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Michael Pitt is in final negotiations for a lead role in "Boardwalk Empire," director Martin Scorsese's HBO drama pilot, which is set in 1920s Atlantic City.

The Hollywood Reporter said Pitt is close to signing on to co-star with Steve Buscemi and Kelly Macdonald in the pilot penned by former "The Sopranos" scribe Terence Winter.

The possible new series is based on Nelson Johnson's book about the birth of Atlantic City.

Pitt had a recurring role on "Dawson's Creek" and has starred in the films "Murder by Numbers," "The Dreamers," "The Village," "Last Days" and "Funny Games."
