Gandolfini signs on for 'Healing' role

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- James Gandolfini, the U.S. actor who played mob boss Tony Soprano on the TV series "The Sopranos," has signed for a role in a film about singer Marvin Gaye.

"Sexual Healing" is about the last years of Gaye's life. It is scheduled to begin shooting April 15, Variety.com said.

Jesse L. Martin, who is best-known for his roles in the TV drama "Law & Order" and the movie musical "Rent," will play the late R&B and soul singer, while Gandolfini is set to portray his promoter, the entertainment industry trade paper reported.

"A Last Goodbye" writer-director Lauren Goodman will helm "Sexual Healing" from a script she wrote inspired by Steven Turner's book "Trouble Man."

Gandolfini will serve as a producer on the film, Variety.com said.
