Diaz gets damages, apology from tabloid

LONDON, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Actress Cameron Diaz accepted a libel award from a U.S. tabloid over a false claim that she had an affair with a married man, her London attorney said.

In addition to the "substantial" award, the London High Court also directed the National Enquirer to apologize to Diaz, the BBC said.

Diaz, 34, sued American Media Inc. over pictures and a story that appeared on the Enquirer's Web site in May 2005 that purportedly showed Diaz cheating on her then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake with a married television producer.

Diaz's attorney, Simon Smith, told the court that the article reported the "Charlie's Angels" star had a "smooching session" with MTV producer Shane Nickerson. The article also alleged that she experienced a "grilling" from Timberlake over the photos.

Smith told the court that after Diaz complained, the article and photographs were removed from the Web site and the print version distributed in Britain contained neither.

Sam Howard, the Enquirer's counsel, said the publication has accepted that the allegations were baseless, adding that they never should have been published.
