MySpace to run film contest in Britain

LONDON, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Having drawn millions of people into its Internet community, MySpace now wants them to come together to help produce a movie to be shot in Britain.

MySpace will host the competition, kicking off Wednesday in London, to find a director for the film, Variety said Monday. MySpace users also will get a chance to choose the title, comment on the script, help pick the cast or even become one of the actors.

A celebrity panel will select three candidates and voters on MySpace will choose the winner, MySpace said. Finalists will be chosen from those who submit film shorts to the MySpace Web site by April 27.

Competition is open to any British resident, whether experienced or neophyte. Shooting is expected to begin in October.

Joining in the nearly $2 million MySpace Movie MashUP are Film4 and Vertigo Films.

The film's subject depends on the director, officials said.

"Until you know what sort of director you're going to get, it's difficult to know if a British thriller or an improvised comedy would be more appropriate," Film4 executive Peter Carlton said.
