The handwritten version of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer," written in 1968, was then given to the musician's biographer Barry Miles, the BBC reported Tuesday.

Also sold at the auction was one of Jimi Hendrix's guitars, which had been kept at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It brought in $168,000.

Another item was a notebook containing lyrics written by Bob Marley, selling for $72,000.

McCartney's lyrics weren't the only Beatles memorabilia to be auctioned, a taped interview with John Lennon from 1974, for an article in Crawdaddy magazine, sold for $38,400.

A poem written by Doors front man Jim Morrison made more than four times its presale estimate, bringing in $50,300.

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Actor Sylvester Stallone returned to his most popular character's hometown of Philadelphia to catch a football game and talk about "Rocky Balboa."

Stallone was the star guest at Monday night's Eagles and Carolina Panthers game and was interviewed during ESPN's telecast of the game, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Stallone also discussed with reporters about his love for Philadelphia, the home of Rocky.

"Philadelphia has been a real safe haven for me," Stallone said. "It's the reason I am here today, because of Philadelphia. They just backed the film. It was really a perfect blend of the character, which really represented the people of Philadelphia. It was a lucky accident that it all came together."

"He is starting out without his wife," Stallone said. "He is literally full of grief, and we see a rebirth of this fellow, certainly not like he was in 'Rocky I,' but an older, wiser guy."
