Elton John: Lucky to be alive

NEW YORK, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- British singer Elton John tells "Access Hollywood" he is lucky to have survived a lifestyle that included unsafe sex, drugs and drinking.

The interview is scheduled to be aired in two parts, Friday and Monday.

"I've dodged so many bullets, not only just because of unsafe sex, but because of the amount of drugs I did, the amount of alcohol, the amount of work I was doing," he said. "I started the Elton John AIDS Foundation because I got so lucky."

The foundation holds its fifth annual benefit in New York on Tuesday.

John said that he plans to cut back on touring after next year, when he turns 60. He said he will spend no more than six months a year on the road.

"I'm only going to work 6 months a year, because I need some time with David, spend some time at home and just stop and smell the roses a little bit," he said.
