Indian politician Gandhi blocking film

NEW DELHI, July 21 (UPI) -- Indian National Congress President Sonia Gandhi has issued a virtual injunction against filmmakers wanting to make a cinematic version of her life.

Gandhi, the widow of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, has blocked the proposed film "Sonia," which was due to begin production in October, The Times of London reported.

"We have served a legal notice," congressional spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said. "The movie is supposedly based on an unauthorized biography, but the director should take the permission of Mrs. Gandhi."

"Sonia" was part of the "Bollywood Initiative" -- a British investment plan in the Indian film industry.

The film's producer, Murli Manohar, has said he has not received a legal notice from Gandhi hopes the situation can be resolved.

"We wanted to make this movie because it is a great story, but there is no point fighting," he told the Times. "We will try to address their concerns, and we are confident we can, but for the moment things are on hold."
