Alicia Keys signs series deal with UPN

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Nine-time Grammy-winner Alicia Keys has signed a deal to develop an hour-long drama based on her life with TV's UPN network.

The deal is similar to the one the network cut with Chris Rock, which turned into his hit series, "Everybody Hates Chris," MTV.com reported Thursday.

The project would be loosely based on Keys' childhood. Her Jamaican father left when she was 2 and Keys was raised by her Irish-Italian mother in New York's Hell's Kitchen.

Keys sang her first role in her kindergarten's production of "The Wiz" at the ripe old age of 4 and started piano lessons when she was 7, MTV.com said.

She was valedictorian of New York's Professional Performing Arts School and had a major label recording deal by age 16.

No timetable has been given for the series, but MTV.com noted it could be ready by next season.
