Connery told an interview being broadcast Monday on BBC One's Breakfast, Craig was a "terrific choice ... a completely new departure."

Producers considered more than 200 actors before deciding go with the blond Bond.

Craig will offer a "really interesting, different" take on the familiar character, Connery noted.

Connery starred in six "Bond" films between 1962 and 1971, including "Dr. No" and "Diamonds Are Forever."

In addition to Connery, Craig shares a "Bond" with Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore, George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton.
