'Sweeney Todd' returns to Broadway

NEW YORK, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Broadway is gearing up for a revival of Stephen Sondheim's dark musical, "Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street."

John Doyle, who staged the original London run, is directing Tony Award winners Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris in the latest version of "Sweeney Todd," which opens Nov. 3 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, Playbill reports.

The story set in the 1830s is about a murderous barber who kills his customers and his neighbor who then cooks the victims in meat pies.

The meat pie-making Mrs. Lovett will mark the first Broadway musical role for LuPone in 17 years, Playbill said.
